The Alps in the European Regionoccupies a very vast area bordering many countries and gives birth to many rivers and its subsidiaries which flow through different terrains of Italy,Switzerland,Austria,Slovenia,Germany,and many other east European countries. In the eastern Alps ,the mountainous region bordering Italy and Austria is namedSouthern Limestone Alps. Here on the Italian border comes the Carnic Alps. Andthe major portion of the Carnic Alps spread over theFriuli region of Italy ,bordering Austria Slovenia to the north and east and the other Italian region Veneto to the west and the AdriaticSeas to the south. It is told that there are areas in the Carnic Alps ,not so well known and some are not even inhabited. But there are areas of Carnic Alps in the Friuli region well developed into tourist centers for skiing,trekking,cycling and many other adventures of the tourist through out the year chosen according to the rotation of climates.
And Monte Zoncolon is one such wonderful mountain station covered with snow and cleverly developed as one of the skiing centers. Officially the Friuli region is known as Friuli Venezia Giulia and the areas developed from these pre alps are locally known as The Lands of Carnia.Giro dItalia, better known as Giro the long distance cycle race is being stage raced through the lands of Carnia.The big climb of Zoncolon is an important point to cover inGiro.The Giro, the long distance cycling race is inspired by the world famous French cycle race Tour de France .
The Italian region Friuli Venezia Giulia region spreads from the Pre Alps to the Adriatic sea. This region is claimed to be an example of Harmony of Diversity. A meeting point betweenLatin,German,and Slav culture. The region spreads from the mountain slopes to the plainsthrough the banks of river Tagliamento and its subsidiraries, having the wonderfully disciplined agricultural plots with different cropsfrom cereals to grapes. The sea.the plains andthen the mountains, the landscape change constantly. And from the records this region tops in the classifications that shows the quality of life through parameters such as per capita income literacy and fewer occupants per kilometer. The main cities of this region are Trieste,Udine,Porderone,and Gorizia. And when you travel on the road from Udine to Tolmezo,there is the town, to the right of you on the mountain side, Gemona, which was totally destroyed in the 1976 earth quake and was rebuiltthereafter.
The Adriatic Sea,Ionian Sea,Ligurian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea are known as the Arms of Mediterranean Sea and the Adriatic Sea is situated largely between the coast of Italy,Croatia and Albania and having IonianSea at the mouth of Mediterranean Sea.
You can fly in to the International airports, inTrieste or Venice,and from these airports as wellas from all from all the cities and towns,there are the Dolmiti buses to all the Carnic Alps villages.Monte Zoncolon is about 160 kms from Venice and 128 kms from Trieste.By train you can reach Calazo in Venice -Paduva line Or Carnia on Udine -_ Tarvisio line.And by road you have to leave the Udine_Tarvisio motorway at Tolmezo,ie at the Carnia exit and drive towords Villa Santina and Forni Avoltri.
